What is Cognitive Impairment?

Cognitive impairment is the loss or impairment of memory, orientation or reasoning capabilities. A person with cognitive impairment may very well be able to perform certain ADLs but yet still need supervision. Examples of diseases that cause cognitive impairment would be Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson’s disease, and various forms of dementia. These diseases will eventually lead to functional incapacitation and ultimately to a permanent need for long-term care.

Activities of Daily Living (or ADL's)

Activities of Daily Living are also referred to as ADL's. These are physical impairments that give rise to the need for custodial care. They include:

-Eating
-Dressing
-Continence
-Bathing
-Toileting
-Transferring

Over 17 million Americans 65 years old and older have some difficulty performing ADL's. In order to qualify for most types of Long Term Care you must have difficulty performing two or more of these ADL's in one way or another.
